Our event on August 14th 2020 was a great success!

It's not too late to show your support as we are still accepting donations.

The community support for what we do is inspiring, and for that we thank each and every one of the walkers, donors, sponsors, and supporters.

Over the years, the YWCA Hanover’s annual Walk A Mile in Her Shoes (WAM) event has had great success bringing our community together to support the mission of Safe Home. Safe Home provides services to victims of domestic violence and human trafficking. In 2019, these services were expanded to include not only the Hanover Area, but Adams County as well, with our new office in Gettysburg.

This year’s WAM, scheduled for August 14th, was looking to be bigger and better than last year’s, which set attendance and donation records. COVID-19 changed that for us, it seems, practically overnight, into a virtual event. With the phased reopening plan, the potential to run this as we have in the past exists by following CDC and local guidelines, but Safe Home’s mission is to keep people safe and we are choosing to honor that by respecting social distancing and crowd size guidelines.

Sadly, and more to the point, COVID-19, is also creating an increase in need for services. From the start of quarantine in March to when we exited in May, there was a 30% increase in the number of new clients. The correlation between being trapped at home with an abuser and an increase in calls is easy to see. However, as abusers emerge from quarantine and return to work we expect an even greater need for services.

You may be asking, “How will this virtual event work?” At its root, it’s a fundraiser. We hope you will sign up and donate as you did in years’ past, text to donate also available (text WAM to 44321). We hope the people who supported your efforts will do so again. If the absence of fanfare and partying convinces you to donate and do nothing else, we understand and appreciate that. However, if you’re looking for a way to promote WAM and what it means to Safe Home and our community, we encourage you to create your own event! On August 14th, you and your group can show your support for this worthy cause by fully participating in our virtual event:

  • Hold a small, socially distanced and outside gathering in support of WAM
  • Display a sign, supplied by YWCA, at your gathering
  • Walk a mile, or around your block, in women’s shoes, or not, and post pictures/video to social media with the hashtag #ywcahanoverwam
  • Watch for new contests and challenges as we get closer to the event week

As mentioned above, the need for domestic violence services has been made greater in these new and challenging times. Your support in the past, this year, and in coming years is appreciated and invaluable to the work we do.
