The Safe Home Program has been serving victims of domestic violence in York and Adams County for approximately 38 years. With the recent closure of Adams County’s domestic violence shelter (Survivors Inc.) and the limited emergency beds available in Hanover your help is needed this year more than ever. As a vested community member I am seeking your help in raising funds for our annual Walk A Mile in Her Shoes event. Last year, Safe Home raised $36,888.48. This helped Safe Home serve already established clients as well as 1,014 new adult victims, 554 hotline calls, 87 Letal Assessment Program calls from the police, 7 adults and 7 children emergency shelter placements, 11 transitional housing assists, 27 civil legal assists and 37 public presentations.
The statistics show why this is such an important issue:
• One out of 4 women and one out of 7 men have been the victimd of severe abuse by an intimate partner.
• Approximately 50 – 70% of children exposed to domestic violence in the home are also physically abused.
• Domestic violence accounts for the largest category of calls to police each year.
• Abusers go to extreme measures to prevent their victims from leaving such as: threats of violence toward the victim, the victim’s children, family members and pets, threats the victim will lose custody of their children and an inability to access funds.
